DSD Italian Collection Tannenbaum Globe Ornament #DSD0907701 2009 New
From David Strand Designs’ Italian Collection : “Tannenbaum”, #DSD0907701. Produced in Italy in 2009. An elegant Italian globe ornament from David Strand Designs. Tannenbaum was inspired by the Christmas Carol “O Tannenbaum”. Written by Ernst Anschutz in 1824, it was based on a traditional German folk song from the 16th century. Although the lyrics do not refer to Christmas or a decorated tree, by the 20th century it became widely associated with Christmas. The song has been adapted in many forms and by many people over the years, notably by American jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi as an instrumental for A Charlie Brown Christmas. This exquisite ornament pays tribute to the song through its elegant form and decoration. It features a dramatically-shaped globe, with the lower portion flaring down to a fluted point and painted with rich red and gold lacquers. The upper portion of the globe is clear glass with a sophisticated white glitter starburst and a scattering of fine white dots suggestive of falling snow. The centerpiece of the ornament is a small evergreen tree resting on a bed of the same fine white glitter. The tree is decorated with miniature red and gold ball ornaments and topped with a red ribbon bow. Colorful wrapped packages surround the base of the tree. The use of globes in ornament production is an Italian tradition. The globe highlights what’s inside it and creates an interior space at which the viewer is encouraged to look. Tannenbaum is a complex piece and required the skills of an extremely talented glassblower. It was hand-painted and hand-glittered by a talented team of decorators who incorporated an imaginative mix of accessories to complete the piece. The use of decorative elements beyond lacquer and glitter is unique to Italian workshops. This spectacular ornament is a testament to the talented artisans who produced it. Tannenbaum references a symbol of Christmas known the world over, yet with a strikingly original form and vivid decoration. It’s new, has never been displayed and comes with attached hangtag. A charming interpretation of characters from Beauty and the Beast produced in Italy for David Strand Designs. Beauty and the Beast is a fairy tale written by French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and first published in 1740. Since then the tale has been rewritten numerous times and adapted for stage, television and film productions, notably by Disney in 1991. That film was Disney’s 30th animated feature, went on to be extremely successful at the box office and along the way won a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar. Beauty and the Beast tells the story of an arrogant young man who was cursed and magically transformed into a monster while his servants were transformed into household objects. To break the curse the Beast must learn to love and be loved in return before the last pedal falls from an enchanted rose. This set of 5 ornaments pays tribute to Beauty and the Beast through representations of several of the household objects in the story: Miss Armoire/The Wardrobe #0706401 7″, Candelabra/Lumiere #0706201 4 3/4″, Tick Tock/Cogsworth #0706301 6 1/2 and Tea For Two/Mrs. Potts & Chip #0706101 5″ & 4″. A charming interpretation of characters from Cinderella produced in Italy for David Strand Designs. Cinderella or The Little Glass Slipper is a fairy tale with origins in antiquity. Many versions of the tale exist with the core elements of unjust oppression and triumphant change of fortune remaining constant. The version best known today was written by French author Charles Perrault in 1697 with additional elements added by the Brothers Grimm in 1812. The tale of Cinderella has been adapted over time for literary works, opera, ballet, theater, television and film. A notable film adaptation was the 1950 animated film by Disney. Disney’s Cinderella of 1950 was a critical and commercial success, garnering three Academy Award nominations and permanently shaping the public’s impression of the story.
